What follows is a brief update as to how our make-your-own school holiday challenge is going.

School holidays

Cook

Mistake one: buying an American packet mix without properly figuring out the conversion differences. Mistake two: buying a red velvet cake with enough added red food colouring to stain whatever part of skin or clothing that comes into contact with it.

Swim

“Mum, watch me dive. Mum, watch me do a backflip.” “You mean a backwards somersault in the water.” “I could try to do a backflip from the side.” “I don’t think you’re ready for that yet.” “Mum, now watch ME dive.” “I am watching.” “No, you weren’t.” “Mum, I’m hungry.” “Mum, I’m hungry, too.” “Mum, watch me dive. WATCH ME DIVE.”

Library

“Mum, MAD magazine is great, you fold these pages together and you get another picture.” MIND BLOWN.

Dance

A lightsaber is a perfectly good substitute for strobing lights or disco balls.

Travel

We went into the city for the afternoon. Big blue autumn sky, there. Bam.

Kidspot Voices of 2014 – Personal and Parenting Top 30

I’m honoured to be included in the Top 30 in Kidspot’s Voices of 2014 Personal and Parenting category.

Voices of 2014 Personal and Parenting

The reception has been lovely and I appreciate the recognition. I love blogging just as much – if more more so – than when I started almost eight years ago here at Miscellaneous Mum. I work hard on the blog, fitting it in with other writing et. al projects when I can, and I always find it fulfilling, but there are extra special days, like yesterday, when I heard my name being called uncertainly in the delicatessen at the supermarket. I turned around, said yes, hello? and had a lovely talk with a reader (J!) who recognised me. There’s no music to my ears quite like “I read you every day.” Warm and fuzzy x

So, thank you Kidspot. And thank you all for being here.

I’ve got a few exciting announcements coming up. (If you follow my Facebook page, or Instagram, you’ll know them already, but I’ll go in to more detail here when I post about it. An – tici- pation!)

Keep on keeping on, 2014!
