Here we are, in term four, on the home stretch before holidays. And here, above, are the kids’ school shoes. Ratty, dirty and almost worn through. A remarkable feat when you think back and realise that they have lasted the entire year. They were bought in Hong Kong while we were there in January. Riley alone usually goes through two, maybe even three, pairs a year. They are Sketchers, a brand I’d never heard of before, but if they’re all like this I think we’ll definitely be repeat customers.

I look at them at the front door, kicked off and abandoned, and I think, “Come on, we can make it. Almost there”. They’ve given me a bit of comfort, truth be told.

We’ll be out shopping for more before long, that I know. Until then, these babies have served mine well. And I’m grateful.
